Oh, I'm sure I could have just tossed this into the Awesome Thread, but this way we have a thread to discuss any number of things VGA-related.

How did you feel about Walking Dead- a game actually worth the title of "Game of the Year"- actually winning?

Dark Souls 2!

Spec Ops: The Line getting utterly shafted!

Or, I dunno, whatever else. The Virtual Lounge is awfully quiet, so here's something to pep y'all up.

The Walking Dead was actually good? I just assumed it was a lazy tie-in out of hand. Might buy that, then.

How depressing is it that I've only played one game in the entire line-up, and that was Half-Life 2?

Anyhow, I'm sure Mass Effect 3 winning will reopen some old wounds, but even if I hadn't liked that game, it's still heads and shoulders above the also-rans.

You didn't hear? That game had an amazing story and feel, and the fact it won over what was probably a huge amount of AAA games certainly shows some more hope for the industry.

As for Mass Effect 3 winning best RPG... Maybe? I'd say something else about that but everything that's been said about ME3 has already been said.

Yeah, Walking Dead game was fantastic. I don't even like the show, but I thought that the game was amazing.

Wait, how many other big RPG's came out in 2012?

Also HL2...Whoo, now get to work on that game that must not be named, Gabe :P

Borderlands 2, Mass Effect 3, Far Cry 3, Walking Dead, Pokemon B&W 2, and Guild Wars 2 are the ones I can think of.

I thought the handheld nominations were silly as all hell. For the life of me, I have no idea why NSMB2 was there instead of, like, Pokemon Black and White 2 or Persona 4: The Golden (I'd also put them somewhere in the GOTY category but I suppose that's unreasonable). I'm not even sure if Sound Shapes should have counted at all - I mean, it's a PS3 game too.

Also thought Xenoblade Chronicles deserved the win over ME3, although upon reflection it's chances of actually winning were so infinitesimal as to be hilarious. Doesn't really matter either way, I certainly had more fun with ME3 than I did Diablo 3.

Two best things to come out of the VGAs remain The Last of Us media and the Dark Souls 2 announcement. I could take or leave everything else.

Huh: I was literally just reading about this on the Mass Effect Wiki. I'd say this is more or less what I hoped for as ME3 went - RPG of the Year yes, GOTY heck no.

SpecOps: The Line did get shafted. I've got some issues with it myself, but for it to not even have a mention is absurd.

To be honest, I did not expect it to make the cut. The reviews were good, but not effusive, and it seems to have absolutely tanked in the markets, to the extent that Take-Two aren't even releasing sales figures. Plus the marketing seemed to be pretty poor: if it wasn't for stumbling upon a review on the A.V. Club, I wouldn't even have heard of it. Considering it was competing in a category filled with big-hitters backed by massive marketing campaigns, it never stood a chance.

This is why I avoid the VGAs like the plague. Also: What does the VGAs have to do with HL2? That game came out eight years ago.

Walking Dead was an amazing combination of characterisation and storytelling, I'm so glad it won GOTY. Don't get me wrong, ME3 was pretty damn good, but TWD did so much more with not even half of ME's budget.

The greatest victory is not the defeat of an enemy,
or the eradication of a threat,
but the simple acceptance that everything changes,
and there is nothing you can do to stop that.

It was the VGAs' tenth anniversary, so they had a "game of the decade" award that went to HL2.

I haven't gotten a chance to play the Walking Dead yet, but I'm hoping to soon. If it's as good as everyone says it is, I hope some AAA devs take pages from its book.
