Galaxy of Fantasy Servers to Restart

Lonus Nerix - Tap!

CIPRITINE - Billions of hardplated gamers across the galaxy went into shock today as the head of Whiteout announced that, first the first time since the siege of Palaven, the servers that once hosted the massively popular Galaxy of Fantasy multiplayer game, are expected to be online by next month.

The catch?

“You’ll have to restart your character,” says Jani Vix, head moderator for the Valluvian server.

That’s right, fellow addicts. The servers were apparently destroyed and the data unrecoverable when Palaven was hit, and backup servers failed across the galaxy on their respective host worlds. Zillions of in-game credits, billions of characters, and innumerable hours of tedious grinding have been completely destroyed.

To compensate, Whiteout is offering five years of discounted subscriptions to new and old users, and 3 million in-game credits to each new character, and a new DLC add-on that promises dozens of new quests, a new level cap, and several ‘unexpected’ areas to open.

Extranet forums, blogs, Chipper and inter-relay chats have been ablaze as the gaming world reacted with flaming reviews and arguments. With Whiteout taking heavy personnel losses in the Reaper War, there are fears that the new generation of GoF developers aren’t up to the standards we expect from them.

For others, the anxiety is personal - one longtime user, known as VaniDreams, posted that, “Even if I recreate Vani, she won’t be the same character I’ve invested thousands of hours into telling a story with.”

Millions have echoed similar statements, as they wait on the edge of their seat for the release, scheduled for [Terran: December 15th].

Well yeah I do but I don't pay credits so I could...sit down, stare at a display and order little people around to kill others.

It's like my job except I lose credits instead of gaining them. What kind of madness is that?

Cool, didn't think they'd be up so soon. Gives me something to look forward to, I guess. I don't really mind restarting my character either, made some dumb choices with him when I was starting out and I was never able to respec. Maybe this'll at least give them the opportunity to rebalance some of the old zones. Was sick of kiting Plagueknives. They might even fix Spirit Blessings, too.

One of my grunts just heard the news.

He actually cried, apparently he had six fully leveled characters.

But he was the idiot who shot up our comms array last year. So I laugh at his misery.

Spirits, I haven't played GoF since my pre-boot days.

Not that I plan on going back anytime soon, don't have the time to invest in MMO's these days, with all the grinding, it feels like you're paying to work a second job.

Huh. I might just start playing. I have free time, it's not expensive, it looks interesting...Why not?

Yes, yes you probably are.

To be fair I probably am too.

Goddammit I am going to miss Valsiel though.

ugh.

I remember this game.

A long time ago I ended up getting 'paid' (it was a barely liveable wage) to play this game. It was probably one of the most boring and tedious jobs you can imagine. Go to this place. Kill this monster. Loot the monster. Send the items off to the "master account" for storage. Repeat until you want to kill yourself.

This was also around the time I was still learning Palaven Standard. And since my employers didn't see fit to supply their employees with translating software for the actual game I had no idea what I was doing most of the time outside of that simple routine drilled into me.

...So that's what Illon was screaming about earlier. In a way, I guess it's reassuring to know that even the apocalypse can't stop some things for long.

Although couldn't the Reapers at least have managed to finish off My Little Moxie?

If it's any help, I don't think the translating software would have helped much. I've read the wiki, talked to players, and I still find this game to be completely incomprehensible beyond the basic mechanics. And reading about the actual mythology just makes things worse.

It's programming with a good message to pre-booters and decent enough production values. It's also, y'know, Hierarchy sponsored. Definite step up from Appius the Unfortunate Xemna. Would be a shame if they needed to find a replacement, it's not like there's a ton of other good Hierarchy shows in that regard.

And reading about the actual mythology just makes things worse.
Makes perfect sense if you know a lick about turian mythology. Only problem is when they start borrowing from other mythologies because they're short on ideas for raid bosses.

Can I try that again? Wait, you mean this thing is still on-
And meanwhile, they still haven't fixed the Galaxy of Warships balance.

The problem is that if you know more than a lick about it, you realize that half of what they're doing resembles the original mythology in name only. (And honestly, the original mythology doesn't make that much sense as it is - there's a reason why most of us switched to the spirits or other religions that don't focus around anthropomorphic deities).

And then there's some of the events. I realize that, say, "Return of the Cyber-Protheans" wasn't supposed to be completely serious in the first place, but still, what were they taking.

I'm not trying to say anything about whether it's fun or worth playing - I don't like the genre as a whole, so it wouldn't be my place - but story-wise, it's a mess.

As for MLM... far be it from me to question the Primarch, but let's just say it's not one of the shows I would have endorsed were I in his position. But I don't think there's much point in having this debate again.

I literally have no clue what point you're trying to make when you suggest turian mythology 'doesn't make that much sense'. Like, okay. I think literally everyone knew that. I don't think, living in a period as we do now, the question is over how much sense turian mythology itself made. We didn't even have written speech for at least a quarter of it, I don't think consistency was expected. I think the point of mythology skated clear across your head.

My point is that it's not the kind of foundation to base a coherent setting or plot off of.
