As for these so-called 'entrepreneurs', well I don't really know anything about business and while I can't fault their... patriotism, I think they're going about it the wrong way. We have the supply, Earth demands. If they're so bothered about paying taxes, well, can't they just up the price of the commodities they ship to Earth? Either the price sticks, and their profit margins slide back up, or it forces Earth into giving tax breaks for businesses providing materials for relief/reconstruction work. And if it's the second, everybody wins?

For the record, this article is misleading. Terra Nova as a whole is not ungrateful to the Alliance, and unless I misread, it's Scott's administration threatening to take these guys to task. So please don't make the mistake of assuming these guys represent the majority of Novans. From the little I hear from my parents, we're still happy to be Alliance. For now.

This one is pleased to learn that the unenkindled others of Petrol Coast have gained their senses, at least in part. Such slanderous acts defile the memory of Shepard The Saviour, so it is pleased beyond measure that they have repented of their crime.

The point isn't even to be grateful. If the Alliance hadn't been there, those people would be dust. And that was just a group of raiders, most of them didn't even sign for this.
Now what happens when Terra Nova is alone, and actual organized groups, let's say the Beast, catch their scent?
What's confusing me is that they faced the danger of pirates, for them it isn't academic, they actually lived it.

Evidence that the alliance needs to work on a comprehensive civil code which the alliance didn't have and wasn't supposed to have before the war. I mean, that was the domain of the nation states.
Look, if they continue to apply military justice to civilians, we will face many more of those blunders. I understand that military types are supposed to be patriotic, but apply treason charges to deal with tax evasion is (if I may borrow that phrase) overkill.
I think the alliance should reinstitute civil law of the the old nation whereever applicable or hire people who can write one for the whole of alliance space.

If this uncertainty in law and justice due to the continual application of martial law and state of emergency clauses (see Alliance Charta §124,4a-d,f and §88,1,3ff.). I mean, will military courts deal with every little neighbourhood spat? Can companies or other 'larger entities' rely that past rulings by civil courts will continue to apply? The alliance military already implements regulations on their own, but how can they be challanged? And if, can a military court be impartial? And would the directors bow to a ruling that benefits the plaintiff? Those will be 5 long years (or more) until the allaince allowes for elections and civil government.
For now I continue to advise my clients whose case won't get heard by a citadel court to go with whatever the alliance demands so they don't go in with MPs and just take over, but I can't guarrantee if they will listen. If some of them are like soldier kid, I mean my cousin Jaq who would risk anything just to see their ideals hold true this act of civil disobidience won't be the only one.

And somehow he expects those memories to not trigger some pretty mixed emotions among people who found out how close their families had come to being wiped out.

Maybe... Certain things I said were a little harsh, and if you believe me (though why should you?) the thoughts of all those innocent people who died, or worse, before the rest of us knew what was happening does weigh pretty heavy on me. But a strong part of me does wish the Reapers could have nailed that fuckstick up there before they left. Just one more jackass who had it coming, all the better if it was instead of some innocent kid on Khar'Shan.
